Maple Apple Baked Beans

Sweet onions, tart Granny Smith apples, savory bacon and pure maple syrup makes this recipe stand out from your average baked beans.

Ingredients

  • 5 cans (15 ounces each) great northern beans, rinsed and drained
  • 2 1/4 cups Granny Smith apples (2 very large apples), peeled and chopped
  • 1 2/3 cups sweet onion, chopped
  • 1 cup cooked bacon, coarsely chopped
  • 1 1/2 cups hickory barbecue sauce
  • 1 cup pure maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup dark brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 1/4 cup stone-ground mustard
  • 2 teaspoons dry mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ancho chile pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. In a large bowl, combine all ingredients and stir well.
  3. Pour in 13-by-9-by-2-inch glass baking dish or cast iron Dutch oven coated with vegetable cooking spray.
  4. Bake for 45 minutes, or until bubbly and heated throughout.

Tips & Notes

Choose Granny Smith, the most tart apple variety, to balance the sweet ingredients in this baked bean dish.
