South Dakota Agriculture
Agriculture is South Dakota’s leading industry, which has a $32.1 billion annual impact on the economy. The state ranks in the top 10 states in the production of 25 agricultural commodities, with over 31,500 farms averaging more than 1,300 acres in size producing a variety of products.
On average, around 3 million acres of several kinds of wheat are planted in the Mount Rushmore State each year – hard red winter, hard red spring and durum. Other notable agricultural commodities in South Dakota are soybeans, sunflowers, beef, pork, oats, barley, rye, flaxseed, sorghum and alfalfa.
