Move over, steak – there’s a new favorite cut of beef on consumers’ plates.
According to a new study by the Beef Checkoff, consumers are eating just as much beef as they were in 2005 – but fewer steaks and deli meats. Ground beef has gained ground, as those surveyed reported eating more of this affordable, versatile beef option.
Respondents preferred 80/20 beef, which means 80% lean and 20% fat, and their favorite cooking method is ground beef prepared as burgers and grilled outdoors.

The survey also reports that more people claim to be foodies, defined in this study as people who enjoy cooking, are interested in trying new foods and use new resources to find new recipes. A variety of ethnic foods have increased in popularity, though American and Italian food still top the list.
