Tobacco has long been an important cash crop in North Carolina, thanks to the state’s dry, sandy soil that’s perfect for the crop. North Carolina continues to be a major tobacco producer, with farmers harvesting 163,900 acres of the crop in 2017. Tobacco generated $688.3 million in annual cash receipts.
