In 2022, beef cattle and calves made up Virginia’s second-leading agricultural commodity in terms of cash receipts, while dairy products and milk took the No. 4 spot on the list. As of Jan. 1, 2023, the state’s inventory of beef cattle totaled 563,000 head. Dairy farmers across the state produced more than 1.4 billion pounds of milk from an inventory of 67,000 dairy cows that year, equivalent to more than 20,000 pounds of milk per cow.
